Before coming to Sigil, Wilbur Cookenstein had a short-lived career as an itinerant diplomat, traveling the lands of his Prime world with allegiance to no one nation. Tiring of that life, he departed the Prime and settled within the Cage, where he forged a career as a realtor and landlord that has persisted for the last 20 years. Though he's relatively successful and comfortable, he's nowhere near the level of a Golden Lord, in large part due to his scrupulous honesty; while it serves his reputation well, it's a significant impediment to any foreseeable ascension to the true upper crust of Sigil.
